The Björn bottle – a finalist of the Good Design 2018 contest
The Björn vodka bottle, produced by BZK Alco, reached the finals of the 25th edition of the Good Design competition. The Institute of Industrial Design rewards the best-designed products and services available on the Polish market. This is the first bottle of strong alcohol in the finals of this competition in the graphics and packaging category.
The packaging of pure vodka Björn definitely stands out among other products in the spirit industry. It is covered with a characteristic texture made up of letters inspired by the appearance of runes. The packaging also encourages interaction – to read the history of the Viking king you need to turn the bottle several times.
– The Björn bottle is a unique project in line with global trends in design – says Grzegorz Głuch, the president of BZK Alco. – At the same time, it is highly noticeable on the store shelf and, what is important, universal. Because of that it can prove itself in export markets – adds Grzegorz Głuch. The company’s representatives emphasize that the brand concept, design, forms and the glass packaging itself were created entirely in Poland, as was the liquor within the bottle.
– The implementation of the bottle required extraordinary precision from designers and engineers – says the bottle designer Magdalena Jabłońska from the Spiritus Movens studio. – Even the smallest element of the packaging had to be carefully considered. The author of the project explains that, thanks to the active cooperation of the client and the glass producer, they managed to achieve a very interesting effect, innovative on the Polish market.
From the design point of view, the design of the Björn bottle was an exceptional challenge. The shape had to reflect the concept with a strong, simple message and had to stand out against the background of competing products. In the deeply engraved surface of the body of the bottle we had to design a flat space for the barcode and the label. Every detail was important, including the length of a single word in the text that surrounds the packaging several times.
The Björn bottle is the first packaging of strong alcohol among the finalists in the graphics and packaging category. Nearly two hundred products were submitted in this year’s edition. The jury picked winners in nine categories: Home, Work, Public Sphere, Services, New Technologies, Graphics and packaging, New production materials, Transport and communication, Fashion and accessories. The awards will be presented during a gala award ceremony on October 25 this year. All winning projects will be on display at the post-competition exhibition.
Good Design is a competition with an established position on the Polish market and has been organized since 1993 by the Institute of Industrial Design. Its idea is to select the best-designed products and services available on the Polish market. The venture is supported by the most important public institutions, such as Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
